How To Choose an OBGYN for You

OBGYN stands for obstetrics and gynecology. An OBGYN specializes in pregnancy and female productive health. Every woman is encouraged to visit an OBGYN regularly, especially those who are or believe they may be pregnant. This review discusses how to choose an OBGYN that is right for you.

Tips for choosing the right OBGYN

Individuals can choose the right OBGYN for their needs by finding an “in-network” provider, reviewing referrals from people they trust, and scheduling a consultation with one that is licensed and has quality reviews from previous patients. Of course, individuals can decide if the OBGYN is right for them long-term depending on how well the consultation visit goes.

Choose an “in-network” provider

It is important that patients choose an “in-network" OBGYN. This ensures that any OBGYN needs are covered and limits the out-of-pocket costs that patients would be responsible for. To do so, it may be advised to review one's insurance policy. It is also advised to consider where each OBGYN is in regards to location. Of course, be sure to ensure any hospital chosen is “in-network” as well.

Get referrals from trusted people

The most important thing to keep in mind when choosing an OBGYN is to find someone that is trustworthy. Subsequently, it makes sense to ask those who are relative, such as family members or friends. If they are able to provide a good referral to an OBGYN nearby, it may be helpful to add to the shortlist when going through the consideration process.

Consider their credentials and experience

It is important to make sure that the OBGYN chosen is properly licensed and trained. In addition, be sure to choose someone with a quality experience, especially if it is one's first time being pregnant or the pregnancy is considered high risk. If there are any concerns about the credentials or experience level of the OBGYN, prepare a list of questions and concerns to raise during the consultation visit.

Read through previous patient reviews

While referrals from trusted people are a great way to find a quality OBGYN, it is also helpful to consider online patient reviews from Google and review sites. If they have quality reviews, it is more likely that the experience will be good as well. On the other hand, negative reviews should be considered a red flag.

Schedule a consultation and ask questions

The best way to determine if an OBGYN is right would be to schedule a consultation visit. During the visit, consider how well the OBGYN and the staff communicate and answer questions.
