Reasons to See a Gynecologist

Wondering what some of the more common reasons are to see a gynecologist? This specialty doctor is one who has decided to focus on women’s health services. Current recommendations state that all women should make an appointment with their gynecologist on a yearly basis until they reach a certain age, after which they should see their gynecologist every two or three years.

What is a gynecologist?

Gynecology is a part of medicine that specifically focuses on diagnosing, treating and taking care of a woman’s reproductive health. This includes screening for and treating any health issues related to their breasts, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and vagina. It is necessary for every female to make a well woman appointment with a gynecologist sometime between the ages of 13 and 15.

The following is a list of reasons for why a woman would need to make an appointment with a gynecologist.

#1 – Contraception services

A gynecologist offers birth control to women who do not want to become pregnant. They will discuss all of the available birth control options with their patients so that they can decide which one is going to work ideally for their particular situation.

#2 – Infertility

A gynecologist is also known as an infertility doctor, and for that reason, they can help women who are experiencing trouble when it comes to getting pregnant. There are a number of fertility tests that can be performed, which are going to be very beneficial when it comes to understanding why someone is not able to get pregnant.

#3 – Menopausal services

Women need gynecological services before, during and after menopause, and a gynecologist can provide them with these special women-related services.

#4 – OBGYN

A gynecologist is also known as a pregnancy doctor because their focus is on the female reproductive system, which means they are able to address any issues related to obstetrics, pregnancy and childbirth.

#5 – Pap smears

Regular pap smears are necessary to screen for cervical cancer. The sooner any cancer cells are found, the better chances the patient has when it comes to a full recovery.

#6 – STD testing

A gynecologist can perform STD testing on sexually active women, which will let them know if they indeed have a sexually transmitted disease, e.g., gonorrhea, chlamydia or syphilis.
