OBGYN

Services Provided by an OBGYN

Thinking about visiting an OBGYN but first want to understand the types of services they offer? The more you understand the types of services that a medical professional can offer, the more likely you will take advantage of those that can benefit you. An OBGYN is a medical professional who is both an obstetrician and a gynecologist.

How to choose an OBGYN

Learning how to choose an OBGYN is something every woman needs to do. While many women will simply choose one based on their location, this does not always ensure a great match. Your first step to choosing a new OBGYN is to get referrals, e.g., family, friends, your PCP, etc. Next, perform online research in order to understand more about their credentials and experience. Then, decide whether you want a female OBGYN or a male OBGYN so you can narrow your list down. You should also make at least three different meet-and-greet appointments.

Services provided by an OBGYN

The list below includes common services that an OBGYN can provide for their patients.

Pelvic examinations and pap smears

According to the Mayo Clinic, a pelvic exam often is part of a routine physical exam to find possible signs of ovarian cysts, sexually transmitted infections, uterine fibroids or early-stage cancer. Pap smears are performed with a goal of identifying any cellular changes that may be taking place in or around the cervix. Pelvic exams and pap smears are both included in important health screenings, as they allow for early-stage treatment.

Breast examinations

Every woman needs to undergo regular breast examinations in order to detect any potential cancers before they can get out of hand. This includes undergoing a manual breast exam by the OBGYN, as well as undergoing a mammogram. Mammograms allow medical professionals to see an X-ray image of the breast tissue, allowing them to look for any abnormalities, including early signs of cancer.

Birth control and family planning

There are many different forms of birth control that a woman can choose from nowadays, e.g., pills, condoms, sponges, diaphragms, etc. Since it is important for a woman to choose the type of birth control that fits in with her lifestyle, an OBGYN will offer their professional advice. When it comes to family planning, OBGYNs tend to offer a wide variety of family planning services. These family planning services include but are not limited to birth control, counseling, education, STD screening and abortion services.
