Sexual Wellness for the Menopausal Woman

sexual wellness Tomball, TX

Thinking your sexual wellness begins to decline once you enter menopause? Think again. Just because you are entering a new stage in your life does not mean that you should expect your sexual desires to start fading away. In fact, women who are entering menopause, as well as post-menopausal women, still have an interest in expressing their sexual desires with their significant other just as much as they did before they entered menopause.

About sexual wellness

Understanding why your sexual wellness is so important will help you take any necessary steps to ensure that you are indeed experiencing good sexual health. When you are a woman who is going through menopause, it can be even more difficult for you to focus on your sexual health, as menopause tends to affect women physically, mentally, emotionally and even socially. Experiencing one or more of these aspects of menopause can make it difficult for you to perform your everyday duties, much less focus on your sexual wellness.

How menopause affects a woman’s sexual wellness

The list below highlights three specific ways in which menopause can potentially affect a woman’s overall sexual wellness.

Lower hormone levels

When women go through menopause, it lowers their hormone levels. This lowering of hormones can cause a condition in women called vaginal atrophy, which means that their vaginal tissue is becoming thinner and drier. Those who are diagnosed with this condition will often experience uncomfortable and even painful sex, which can make women want to have less sex or even avoid having sex altogether. A lower level of hormones can also lower a woman’s sex drive, which means she is no longer able to become sexually aroused.

Night sweats

The majority of women who are going through menopause will experience night sweats, which are similar to hot flashes except for they happen during the night when sleeping. These night sweats can easily get in the way of a woman’s ability to get a good night’s sleep. When women are not able to get the rest they need, especially during menopause, they often feel fatigued and even irritable.

Emotional changes

Another common change a woman will experience when going through menopause is emotional changes, also known as mood swings. The fact that women have no control over how they are going to feel from one minute to the next makes it difficult to feel like engaging in sexual activities. These emotional changes can be very tiring as they occur around the clock, often making women feel stressed and even irritable about their overall condition.
