A hysterectomy can either be recommended by a physician or elected to be done by personal choice. This procedure is performed by a surgeon who specializes in female reproductive healthcare.
There are many reasons to have the surgery performed. One of the biggest is so the person is able to be more comfortable and reduce any symptoms they are experiencing.
What is the hysterectomy procedure?
A hysterectomy is when the uterus is surgically removed. Certain surgeries will also remove the ovaries and fallopian tubes, if necessary. Once these parts are removed, the person no longer can become pregnant. The procedure is a straightforward one, where the person may leave the same or the next day after surgery has been performed.
What is a uterus?
A uterus is a female reproductive organ that holds a growing baby. It is also the part of the body that causes menstrual periods. It can have various health issues, which is why having it removed might be recommended.
Types of hysterectomies
There is more than one type of hysterectomy procedure. Depending on the specific issue being addressed, one procedure might be used over another. Here are the different procedures to be aware of:
Subtotal hysterectomy removes only the top part of the uterus and leaves the cervix in place.
Radical hysterectomy removes the uterus, the tissues on the sides of where the uterus was, the top part of the vagina, the cervix, and possibly the fallopian tubes and ovaries. This is the procedure that is most commonly performed when a woman has cancer.
Total hysterectomy removes the entire uterus and the cervix but leaves most of the other items that are removed with a radical hysterectomy.
Reasons to have a hysterectomy
There are many reasons this procedure may be recommended by a doctor, including:
- Uterine fibroids
- Uterine prolapse
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Certain types of cancers
- Endometriosis
- Chronic pelvic pain
This could be required in order to fight cancer
Cancerous polyps and cysts need to be removed as soon as possible. This will help reduce the spreading of the disease. Whether in the uterus or the cervix, this surgery helps many people live normal lives.
