OBGYN

What to Expect at Your First OBGYN Appointment

If you are pregnant, an OBGYN will be one of your most important sources of care during these nine months. Choosing the right doctor is critical to your well-being and your baby’s development. The first time you meet with your doctor will help set the tone for the rest of the appointments. It is helpful to understand what will take place at this initial meeting and how the doctor will address your needs.

The role this doctor plays

An obstetrician/gynecologist has training and knowledge of the female reproductive system. This doctor also focuses on looking after the wellness of a woman during her pregnancy and in the weeks after the baby is born. This doctor will keep in close contact with the patient by having regular visits, especially as the delivery date comes closer. This doctor monitors the woman’s health and the baby’s growth. The physician will also be the one to deliver the baby. In addition to these roles, this doctor can screen a woman for cancer and can look for infections in the reproductive area.

History lesson

The first time a person sees an OBGYN, she will fill out a health history questionnaire. This is helpful for the doctor and staff to know about previous or existing health conditions as well as concerns that may affect the treatment. The doctor will review the form and will then discuss key points with the patient. The two will talk about any previous pregnancies, including those that may have ended in miscarriage or did not go full term.

Physical exam

The OBGYN will then examine the pelvis, abdomen and breasts. The doctor will also focus on the pregnancy itself for expectant mothers. This examination can help reveal troubling conditions that may affect the pregnancy. The physician could also identify other issues such as lumps, high blood pressure or cysts.

Q&A

Once the doctor has asked questions, it is time for the patient to do the same. The patient will have every opportunity to express concerns or inquire about her pregnancy and what to expect going forward. There may be a discussion about any medication needs as well as an intervention to help the patient feel more comfortable during the pregnancy. This is also an ideal appointment for the woman to talk to the doctor about her daily routine and what changes she might need to make.

Concern and compassion from the OBGYN

The OBGYN will put the patient’s interests at the forefront. Women can expect sensitivity to all wellness matters. The doctor will never do anything that makes the patient feel uncomfortable and will strive to make each appointment as painless as possible. All tests will be performed discreetly.
