5 Types of Ovarian Cyst Treatments
An ovarian cyst can be concerning, and it can be helpful to seek the appropriate ovarian cyst in the event one does not resolve itself in a timely manner.
Fortunately, there are several ovarian cyst treatment options for those who suffer symptoms of a severe ovarian cyst.
Ovarian cyst treatments
By understanding the ovarian cyst treatment options available, you can determine what course of action should be taken once a cyst develops. The exact form of treatment is dependent upon the severity of the ovarian cyst in question. The following are five of the more common types of ovarian cyst treatment.
1. Monitoring the symptoms
Most ovarian cysts resolve themselves in a relatively short amount of time, without causing many, if any, symptoms.
Subsequently, often all that is needed is to monitor the symptoms and ensure they do not develop, worsen or linger for an extended amount of time while the body naturally fights off the cyst.
In the event the symptoms worsen or linger, a more extensive course of action may be needed for the ovarian cyst.
2. Home remedies
For minor ovarian cysts that either do not show any symptoms at all or only display minor symptoms that are tolerable, deeper treatment of the underlying cause is not necessary. Rather, all that is needed is to manage the symptoms through simple home remedies.
By using various techniques to relieve any cramping that occurs — such as heat therapy and taking an Epsom salt bath — the cramps can be managed until the body rids itself of the cyst. Pain relief medication may also help relieve the symptoms in some situations, as well.
3. Birth control medication
Birth control pills are often prescribed as a form of ovarian cyst treatment when ovarian cysts become chronic and are not able to be successfully managed through other means, although it is encouraged to talk to a doctor before starting oral contraceptives as a form of ovarian cyst treatment.
Oral contraceptives work to relieve ovarian cysts by stopping ovulation and preventing the development of new ovarian cysts in the future. Additionally, oral contraceptives may also reduce the risk of ovarian cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women.
4. Laparoscopy
A laparoscopy is a surgical procedure that is performed to remove an ovarian cyst which is not able to be treated through non-surgical means. Although laparoscopy is surgical, it only involves making a small incision and is not too invasive.
Although not incredibly invasive, most doctors prefer to try non-surgical methods of treatment before resulting in the need for a laparoscopy to remove the cyst.
5. Laparotomy
A laparotomy is another form of ovarian cyst treatment that is surgical, although a laparotomy is much more invasive than a laparoscopy.
A laparotomy is most commonly used to remove a much larger ovarian cyst, and it involves a larger incision than a laparoscopy. Oftentimes a laparotomy is ordered when a biopsy of the cyst is needed to determine whether or not it is cancerous, in which case a hysterectomy may be needed to remove your ovaries and uterus.
