What to Expect During a Visit to the Gynecologist

Gynecologist Tomball, TX

The first visit to a gynecologist is a proactive and engaging way to participate in your healthcare. This appointment focuses on your needs and goals regarding the healthcare surrounding your reproductive system. While feeling nervous is normal, knowing what to expect during the appointment can help calm your nerves.

Preparing for the appointment

For many individuals, especially those attending their appointment with a new practice, the idea of visiting a gynecologist can feel overwhelming. However, most visits follow a standard format that prioritizes comfort, confidentiality, and empowering patients through education. The initial step of a gynecological visit often involves filling out paperwork related to personal, surgical, and family medical history. The provider will also ask about the patient's allergies and medications they are currently taking.

Getting to know the patient

After taking the patient's medical history, the gynecologist will ask the patient about their overall mood and well-being. Common topics of conversation include:

  • Physical developments, such as an abnormal lump in the breast tissue
  • Menstrual cycle history
  • Number of pregnancies and associated complications
  • Previous gynecological history like pap smears, STIs, and ovarian cysts
  • Bowel or bladder dysfunction
  • Pelvic pain or unusual vaginal discharge
  • Changes in the vagina or vulvar area

While some of these questions seem personal, being honest with the provider can better inform them about the patient's overall health and any concerns they may have.

The physical examination

Breast exam

The gynecologist will touch the patient's breasts with gentle pressure. They are looking for lumps, thick tissue, or discharge. For young patients, the gynecologist will take the time to teach them how to perform a self-breast exam at home to look for abnormal lumps or tissues between visits.

Speculum pelvic exam

A pelvic exam is a routine component of many gynecological visits, particularly for those who are sexually active or over the age of 21. During this exam, the patient will lie down on an examination table and put their feet in stirrups. First, the gynecologist will perform a visual external exam, where they assess the patient's clitoris, labia, vaginal opening, and anus. Then, they will use a speculum to examine the vaginal canal and cervix. It is normal to feel a sense of pressure; however, patients should tell their provider if they feel discomfort. If the patient is due for a Pap smear, the gynecologist will take a sample from the cervix using a small brush or swab.

Bimanual pelvic exam

This type of pelvic exam checks the patient's internal female organs. The gynecologist will insert one or two lubricated fingers into the vaginal canal. With their other hand, they will apply gentle pressure to the lower abdomen. The patient may feel slight discomfort, but it should not feel severely painful. If they do, they should alert their provider immediately.

Additional tests and screenings

The gynecologist may recommend further diagnostic tests for individuals experiencing specific symptoms such as irregular periods, pelvic pain, or unusual discharge. These may include:

  • Blood tests
  • Ultrasound imaging
  • Sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening

These tests aim to identify any underlying conditions in their early stages and initiate appropriate treatment when necessary.
